Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Mudashiru Obasa has been impeched by members of the house
The Speaker was impeached on Monday by 90 percent of the lawmakers for misconduct and abuse of office.
The Clerk, of the house, Olalekan Onafeko was also removed on the ground that he was singlehandedly brought to the Assembly by Obasa
The lawmakers subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda, representative of Apapa I, as the new speaker.
In A joint statement by the members of the house, the said “ Change is inevitable. The members of the parliament, today have decided to change the leadership of the house.”
“And you know the constitution made it clear that the house has the power to regulate its proceedings.”
“So the members of the house felt it has had enough of Mudashiru Obasa, and today we have unanimously agreed that Right Honorable Mojisola Meranda-Lasbat becomes the house speaker.”
“So, it was a resolution concurred to by all members of the parliament, and so be it.”
Honourable Fatai Mojeed Adebola was also elected as the Deputy speaker of the assembly.
The lawmakers further said that all the principal positions and standing committees have been dsolved.”
The lawmakers said that they resolved to work together to move the parliament to the next level, stating that that they owe their constituencies and Lagos State a duty of ensuring the sanctity and integrity of the house is restored, and such cannot allow the house to dwindle.
Armed personnel of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS; Lagos Task Force, and the Police have taken over the premises and environs. They turned back motorists and persons from gaining access.
Taking her oath of office, Meranda said: “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly;
“That I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The lawmakers described the event as an action to save save the image of the house and that of the house.
