Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Monday issued a $10 million fine against TikTok for “not implementing the necessary measures” to prevent viral video challenges that have allegedly led to the deaths of three Venezuelan children recently.
Judge Tania D’Amelio said TikTok had acted in a negligent manner, and ordered the company to pay the fine in eight days,
“The responsibility of the TikTok platform for the timely control of the so-called viral challenges their content affect the health and lives of our children and adolescents has become evident”
“We impose on the company a fine equivalent to $10 million for not having implemented the necessary and adequate measures to prevent the dissemination of publications whose content is elusive to the so-called viral challenges in violation of the Venezuelan legal system.”
According to the court, a technical round table discussion should be held with the families of the victims and money from the fine be used to compensate the damages to those families affected.
The court also ordered the video service company to open an office in Venezuela that would supervise content so that it complies with local laws.
In November, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed TikTok for the death of a 12-year-old girl who allegedly died after participating in a TikTok challenge that involved taking tranquilizer pills and not falling asleep, and asked the social media platform to restrict contents that kill human beings.
TikTok responded by saying “it understands the concerns but did not act.
According to a commentator,“ The police and Ministry of Education has a huge responsibility to study the issue to give reconditions to regulate the use of social networking technologies in schools and also and to educate not only our students but also our teachers and families.”
The question here is – Should TikTok challenges be closely monitored and regulated?
Let’s discuss.
