The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Shipping, in collaboration with Stena Bulk and Caverton Marine Limited, has announced a groundbreaking joint venture to revolutionize maritime transportation in Nigeria and West Africa.
The agreement, signed last week in London, aims to establish a modern tanker operation catering to the region’s crude oil, refined products, and LNG shipping needs. According to Mr. Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, the new company will deliver top-tier, reliable, and efficient maritime services while exploring vessel acquisitions and long-term charters to build a cost-effective, sustainable fleet.
Key highlights of the joint venture:
- Fleet Development: A mix of new and existing vessels, depending on market dynamics, to meet NNPC’s domestic refining, import/export, and LNG logistics needs.
- Broader Market Service: Beyond NNPC, the fleet will support other oil producers and traders, leveraging a strategic mix of financial strength, modern vessels, and industry expertise.
- Strengthening Infrastructure: The partnership aims to enhance Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, boosting its global energy logistics position.
Leadership perspectives:
- Panos Gliatis, MD of NNPC Shipping, highlighted the venture as a milestone for Nigeria’s maritime modernization, enhancing the nation’s refining and logistics capacity.
- Erik Hånell, President/CEO of Stena Bulk, emphasized the alignment with Stena’s growth strategy, expressing pride in supporting Nigeria’s energy transformation.
- Bode Makanjuola, CEO of Caverton Offshore Support Group, noted that combining local expertise with global best practices will establish a world-class maritime operation.
This joint venture comes as Nigeria’s strategic location, growing population, and infrastructure ambitions create fresh opportunities for the shipping sector. The collaboration is set to enhance not only immediate logistical capacity but also contribute to long-term economic diversification and growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With NNPC Shipping at the helm, alongside Stena Bulk’s global reach and Caverton Marine’s regional expertise, the partnership is poised to redefine energy logistics in West Africa
