Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticised NATO allies, describing them as “cowards” for what he called their failure to assist in efforts to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump accused member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization of not doing enough to ensure free passage through the key shipping route, which is crucial for global energy supplies.
He argued that the burden of maintaining security in the region had fallen disproportionately on the United States, insisting that allied nations should take a more active role in addressing disruptions affecting international trade.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where concerns over the safety of maritime traffic have escalated following recent developments involving Iran.
NATO has not immediately responded to the comments, but the alliance has previously emphasised the importance of collective security and cooperation among its members in safeguarding critical international waterways.
