IBADAN — President Bola Tinubu on Friday praised Nigerians for their resilience amid recent economic and social headwinds, assuring that current sacrifices are “already bearing fruits of progress.” He spoke at the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at historic Mapo Hall.
“I know the times have been hard, but your suffering is not without purpose,” Tinubu said, promising a “solid foundation for a brighter and more prosperous future.” He pledged continued collaboration with traditional institutions and state governments to drive peace, security and economic revitalisation nationwide.
Paying tribute to the new monarch, the president described Oba Ladoja as “a monarch of wisdom, peace, and vision,” noting his popularity and past political challenges. “His ascension to the throne marks a new era of hope and unity for Ibadanland… I have no doubt that under his leadership, Ibadan will witness even greater development,” Tinubu added.
Represented by dignitaries and addressing a gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders and citizens, Tinubu also saluted former governors Donald Duke, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Gbenga Daniel, framing the ceremony as both historic and unifying. “Today is an important occasion… It is a great honor and moment of history that you ascend the throne of your forebears,” he said.
The president’s remarks come as his administration pursues structural reforms he says are necessary to reset the economy, while acknowledging the near-term strain on households and businesses. He reiterated that the government remains focused on stabilising living costs, safeguarding livelihoods and accelerating inclusive growth.
“Kabiyesi Oba Rashidi Ladoja is not only a man of immense experience but one deeply loved by his people,” Tinubu said. “This moment is not for long speeches… To many of you here present today, I am honored.”
The event concluded with vows of partnership between the palace and government, as dignitaries and residents celebrated a new chapter for Ibadanland.
