Heavy security has surrounded the Lagos State House of Assembly in Ikeja as lawmakers prepare for an emergency plenary on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The security presence, which has been in place for weeks, was intensified ahead of an expected leadership change. Newly elected Speaker Mojisola Meranda is reportedly set to resign, aligning with the zoning arrangement favoring a candidate from the West Zone.
Armed officers from the Rapid Response Squad and the Police Command have taken strategic positions, thoroughly screening all visitors and staff.
“The atmosphere in the Assembly this morning is very tense with heavy security. It took me over an hour to gain access,” a staff member told Vanguard anonymously.
This follows a resolution brokered by President Bola Tinubu and top APC leaders to address the Assembly crisis.
High-level discussions reportedly secured a “soft landing” for former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, commuting his removal to a resignation.
