Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerian leaders to focus more on serving the public than serving themselves. He emphasized that leadership should be centered around the people and their needs, rather than personal interests.
Hosting governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) at his home in Kaduna during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Buhari urged public office holders to embrace a leadership style that is “citizen-centric,” noting that true governance involves balancing responsibility with opportunity.
“We must prioritize the welfare of the people above our own. Leadership is both a challenge and an opportunity, and how we handle that balance can shape the future of our country,” Buhari stated.
The former president also reflected on his time in office, revealing that he left the presidency with the same personal belongings he had before assuming office. He expressed appreciation to the current administration for refurbishing his residence, saying, “Externally, the house looks the same, but a lot of work has been done inside. I am grateful for that.”
Buhari welcomed both familiar faces and new members among the APC governors, appreciating their visit and urging them to remain steadfast in building the party and the nation.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, led the delegation and praised Buhari’s enduring impact on Nigerian politics.
“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity and direction,” Uzodinma said, reading from a statement released by Buhari’s former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.
He continued, “Your legacy in Nigerian history is secure. You remain the only opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president. You governed with calm resolve and handed over with honour.”
Uzodinma highlighted key achievements under Buhari’s administration, including security gains, infrastructure development, anti-corruption efforts, and agricultural reforms like the Anchor Borrowers Scheme.
“You taught us to produce what we eat and eat what we produce. You brought dignity to governance,” he added.
He also commended Buhari for his endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, noting that it reflected party unity and continuity. “Your recent birthday message reaffirming the APC as your party of choice was a powerful symbol.”
As the APC looks to the future, Uzodinma called on Buhari to continue guiding the party with his wisdom and values. “We honour you not just for your service, but for what you still represent. Your support will help us strengthen progressive politics and secure a better Nigeria.”
