General Olufemi Oluyede has formally assumed his role as the 24th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) following a Regimental Quarter Guard procedure that marked the final stage of his handover. Addressing Principal Staff Officers of the Nigerian Army, General Oluyede expressed gratitude to the officers and soldiers for their sacrifices in maintaining the nation’s unity and commended their support during the solemn period leading to the burial of his predecessor, the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
In his remarks, General Oluyede emphasized the importance of innovation in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, and other threats. He urged commanders to think creatively and develop novel strategies to combat these issues effectively.
Reflecting on his recent visit to troops engaged in Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, General Oluyede reassured them of his commitment to providing the necessary support and morale to ensure the success of their mission. He highlighted the Army’s awareness of the evolving security landscape and reiterated the institution’s resolve to adapt and remain proactive.
Earlier, Major General Ohwonigho Akpor, Chief of Administration, described the regimental event as a solemn occasion that included retiring the old Nigerian Army flag to the Army Museum—a symbolic gesture honoring the late General Lagbaja’s dedicated service and command.
