Accord Party presidential candidate Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has said his greatest concern is the direction Nigeria is taking, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent engagement with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
While expressing sympathy for the President, he maintained that the nation’s wellbeing deserves greater attention.
“I pity President Tinubu, but I am more concerned for Nigeria.”
According to Olawepo-Hashim, he listened carefully to the President’s remarks on several occasions before reaching his conclusion. He said the message did not reflect the leadership qualities he associated with Tinubu during the period they interacted between 2018 and 2021.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic history, he pointed to the peaceful transition that followed the 2015 presidential election as a milestone the country should preserve. He added that the exercise enhanced Nigeria’s democratic image both at home and abroad.
“Any election that falls short of the 2015 democratic standard will not be acceptable.”
He urged the Federal Government to ensure that preparations for the 2027 general election strengthen, rather than weaken, public trust in the electoral process. In his view, credible elections remain fundamental to the country’s democratic progress.
Olawepo-Hashim also advised those closest to the President to offer objective and sincere counsel. He said decisions driven by the national interest would serve the administration and Nigerians better than partisan considerations.
He concluded by calling on political leaders, institutions and stakeholders to defend democratic values. He stressed that transparent elections, accountable governance and respect for the rule of law are essential for Nigeria’s unity and long-term development.
