Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State have resolved to deepen economic and security cooperation between their states, with a strong focus on agricultural development and food security. The agreement was reached following a closed-door meeting held on Tuesday at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan. Speaking to journalists afterward, Governor Abiodun emphasized the historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two states—ties that date back to their shared history in the old Western Region.
“We have strong ties, both cultural and economic, with the people and government of Oyo State. It is only natural that we work closely together,” Abiodun stated.
Focus on Agriculture and Food Security
The two leaders discussed strategies to transform the region into the “breadbasket of the country”, aligning efforts to promote local food production and agro-industrial development. Abiodun lauded Oyo State’s agricultural initiatives and shared Ogun’s contributions through its farms in Odeda, Imeko, and Yewa North, which border Oyo.
“We want to ensure we grow what we eat and eat what we grow,” he added.
Security Collaboration
Governor Abiodun also highlighted the importance of regional security as a foundation for socio-economic progress. He commended the role of the Southwest Security Network, AMOTEKUN, for providing critical intelligence and ensuring the safety of communities across the region.
The meeting signals a renewed commitment by both states to align policies, leverage shared resources, and foster sustainable development through strategic collaboration.
