Presidential and vice presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have thrown their support behind Cardinal John Onaiyekan and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). They said the clerics acted within their responsibility by commenting on issues affecting the country.

Obi maintained that religious leaders have a legitimate role in speaking on matters of governance, justice and the welfare of citizens. He said opinions offered in the public interest should not be interpreted as political hostility.

“The Church has a duty to speak for the people and the vulnerable.”

Kwankwaso said the concerns raised by the bishops mirror the daily realities faced by many Nigerians. Rather than criticising the messengers, he urged government officials to focus on resolving the challenges highlighted by the clerics.

“National interest should come before political sentiments.”

He also noted that faith-based organisations have consistently contributed to national development through education, healthcare and humanitarian work. According to him, their views deserve respect whenever they address issues of public importance.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, in his own remarks, dismissed suggestions that the bishops were advancing any political agenda. He explained that their mission is to encourage leaders to govern responsibly and remain accountable to the people.

“Our responsibility is to speak the truth and encourage good governance.”

Observers said the reactions underscore the continuing debate over the role of religious institutions in public affairs. They added that constructive engagement between government and faith leaders can strengthen accountability and support democratic governance.
