Prominent Lagos-based lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, has criticized the nomination of Boni Haruna as a minister, describing it as a setback to the Federal Government’s proclaimed fight against corruption. Aturu expressed dismay over the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) nominating an individual facing allegations of corruption, stating that such actions undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
Aturu noted, “I am shocked that PDP will be appointing somebody who has allegations of corruption hanging on his head. That doesn’t show that the party is seriously committed to the fight against corruption. It sends a wrong signal to the world that the ruling party in Nigeria does not see anything wrong in fighting corruption.”
He further criticized the timing of the nomination, arguing that it was premature given the unresolved court cases involving Haruna. “Ordinarily, it should have waited for these people to clear their names before they are nominated for any appointment,” Aturu said.
He called on the National Assembly to reject Haruna’s nomination until he satisfactorily addresses the allegations. “I will be calling on the National Assembly not to approve the nomination of Haruna until he can satisfactorily clear his name of those allegations against him,” Aturu concluded.
Aturu’s remarks underscore the need for transparency and moral accountability in political appointments, as public perception and international credibility are at stake.
