The Federal High Court has dismissed a suit seeking to stop the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its upcoming national convention, effectively clearing the way for the event to proceed as planned.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo held that the plaintiffs failed to establish any valid grounds to restrain the opposition party from conducting its internal exercise. The judge emphasized that political parties have the constitutional right to manage their affairs, provided they comply with their own rules and the nation’s electoral laws.
The court’s decision followed weeks of internal wrangling and legal challenges from some aggrieved members who alleged irregularities in the party’s preparations for the convention.
Reacting to the ruling, the PDP National Publicity Secretary said the judgment reaffirms the party’s commitment to transparency and democracy. “This victory belongs to our members and all Nigerians who believe in due process,” he said.
The convention, which will bring together delegates from across the country, is expected to address leadership restructuring and key policy directions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party leaders have welcomed the court’s verdict as a major relief, saying it allows the PDP to focus on unity and rebuilding its image as a strong opposition force.
