Nigeria and Cuba have taken a significant step toward strengthening their bilateral relations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in key areas such as healthcare, trade, investment, and technology.
The agreement was formalized during the visit of Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Parrilla, to Nigeria, where he was warmly received by his Nigerian counterpart, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.
Tuggar emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations, noting Cuba’s prominent role in supporting Africa’s liberation struggles in the 1960s and 1970s. He highlighted the shared heritage of both nations and described Cuba as part of Nigeria’s diaspora.
Speaking on the significance of the agreement, Tuggar stated, “We just signed an MOU to further strengthen our political relationship and enhance collaboration bilaterally and multilaterally across various sectors, including trade, investment, research, healthcare, and technology.”
Minister Parrilla, in his address, expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s longstanding support for Cuba, particularly in advocating against international embargoes. He acknowledged the deep-rooted African influence in Cuba and reiterated his country’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria.
“When you say Cuba, you are also saying Africa,” Parrilla stated. “Enhancing our relations with African nations, especially Nigeria, is a real priority for us.”
Both countries see this agreement as a foundation for expanding cooperation, fostering development, and promoting shared interests on the global stage.
