Aba Power Limited Electric, an electricity distribution company in Abia State, announced a significant tariff increase exceeding 50%, effective January 1, 2025, following approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The new rates were disclosed via the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The adjustment raises Band A feeder tariffs from ₦99/kWh to between ₦219.70 and ₦241.45/kWh. Band B customers will now pay ₦180.77 to ₦203/kWh, while Band C charges range from ₦145 to ₦205/kWh. Aba Power attributed the hike to Nigeria’s challenging macroeconomic environment, which has driven up operational costs.
The company emphasized that the tariff review aims to maintain service quality amid these economic pressures, aligning with regulatory standards. The application for the adjustment, submitted on December 11, 2024, received approval within 26 days, underlining the urgency of the company’s financial challenges.
