BISHKEK — Russian President Vladimir Putin briefly set politics aside for culture on Wednesday when he tried his hand at the komuz, a traditional three-string Kyrgyz lute, during a state visit to Kyrgyzstan.
The informal moment took place in front of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and other officials gathered in Bishkek for a summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO).
As part of a short cultural tour showcasing Kyrgyz heritage, staff explained the central role of the komuz in the country’s music. Putin was then invited to hold the instrument and pluck a few notes, drawing smiles from those present, before the delegation moved on.
The visit also featured the signing of several agreements between Russia and Kyrgyzstan covering trade, education, migration and security, underscoring Moscow’s continuing bid to deepen ties with its Central Asian partner alongside the more symbolic gestures of cultural diplomacy.
