The upcoming Artemis II mission represents a major step in human space exploration, as NASA continues to lay the groundwork for future deep-space travel.
A spokesperson for NASA said that while Artemis II will focus on a crewed journey around the Moon, the broader ambition extends far beyond.
“The end goal is to go to Mars,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing that each mission in the Artemis programme is designed to build the technology and experience needed for long-duration spaceflight.
Artemis II will mark the first time astronauts travel beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo era, carrying a crew on a lunar flyby without landing. The mission is expected to test critical systems, including life support and navigation, that will be essential for future missions deeper into space.
According to NASA, these steps are part of a long-term strategy to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon before eventually sending astronauts to Mars, a goal that remains at the centre of the agency’s exploration plans.
