A major rail mishap occurred on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line on Monday when a passenger train derailed, causing multiple carriages to overturn in the Kaduna direction. The incident, which happened along one of Nigeria’s busiest rail corridors, immediately sparked panic among passengers and renewed concerns over the safety of the nation’s transport infrastructure.
According to eyewitness accounts, the train, which departed Abuja in the morning hours, veered off its tracks near Jere, leading to the derailment of several coaches. Transitioning from initial shock to rescue operations, emergency response teams, including officials from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and security agencies, quickly rushed to the scene to assist stranded passengers and assess the extent of the damage.
While no official casualty figures have been released, reports indicate that several passengers sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Early speculations point to possible track faults or mechanical failure, although sabotage has not been ruled out due to previous attacks on the same rail route.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, launched in 2016, has served as a critical alternative to the Abuja-Kaduna highway, which has long been plagued by insecurity. However, this latest mishap raises new safety questions for thousands of daily commuters who rely on the service.
In response, the Ministry of Transportation has vowed to enhance maintenance protocols, improve monitoring systems, and ensure that passenger safety remains a top priority. Passengers are also being reassured that rail services will resume once thorough safety checks are completed.
