The announcement, made during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), invites skilled professionals, artisans, and blue-collar workers from Nigeria to work and live in the coastal city.
Under this arrangement, eligible Nigerians will benefit from a special visa category designed to facilitate relocation, employment, and professional up-skilling in Kisarazu. The program aligns with Japan’s effort to address labor shortages while fostering bilateral ties.
Key Highlights of Kisarazu as Nigerians’ ‘Hometown’:
- Strategic Location: Situated about 70 km from Tokyo and connected via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, Kisarazu offers an ideal blend of coastal quality of life and urban access.
- Olympic Legacy: The city once hosted the Nigerian Olympic team during the Tokyo 2020 pre-games training, laying the foundation for this deeper collaboration.
- Economic and Cultural Hub: As part of the Keiyō Industrial Zone, Kisarazu has strong steel, electronics, and retail sectors, alongside vibrant local culture—festivals, traditional foods, and historic sites enrich the experience for new residents.
- Affordable and Safe: With comparatively lower living costs than central Tokyo and a reputation for safety, the city presents an appealing environment for families and individuals.
- Inclusive Community Opportunity: By designating Kisarazu as a home base for Nigerians, Japan hopes to foster integration and multicultural engagement, supported by existing religious and cultural networks in nearby areas.
During TICAD9, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba underlined the importance of co-creation, youth empowerment, and regional revitalization in Japan–Africa relations. He also announced a $5.5 billion investment in Africa to promote sustainable, private-sector-led growth. The “hometown” initiative dovetails with that vision by enabling structured, mutually beneficial mobility and workforce development.
