United Nigeria Airline’s Founder, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has commended the Federal Government for creating a favorable environment for domestic airlines to thrive. In a statement marking the airline’s 4th anniversary, Okonkwo highlighted the positive impact of recent government policies, particularly in addressing foreign exchange challenges and stabilizing the aviation industry.
Unlike many African countries where governments control over 70% of the aviation sector, Nigeria’s industry is private-sector driven. Okonkwo praised President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing aviation and expressed confidence that the sector could contribute to Nigeria’s goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy. He credited Tinubu’s administration for resolving issues such as access to foreign exchange and the trapped funds crisis that previously tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation.
Additionally, Okonkwo acknowledged Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN) for implementing policies that safeguard domestic airline operators. He noted that since its launch on February 12, 2021, United Nigeria Airlines has navigated challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and continues to grow.
Calling for further government support, he urged authorities to introduce a single-window loan system for the aviation sector, offering operators lower interest rates. He criticized the current 30% loan interest rate, arguing that it hinders industry growth and competitiveness.
Okonkwo emphasized that the aviation sector has untapped potential and needs more support to expand. His call aligns with similar praise from Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema, who recently lauded President Tinubu for introducing reforms that ease business operations in aviation.
