Kenya’s Edwin Kibet Koech has claimed victory in the men’s division of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, securing the prestigious $50,000 first-place prize. This marks Koech’s second win in the event, having previously triumphed in the 2023 edition. He completed the 42km race in a record time of 2 hours and 14 minutes.
The marathon, now in its 10th year since its inception in 2016, has grown significantly, earning a World Athletics gold label. Organizers are now working toward achieving the platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to attain this distinction.
The 2025 edition saw approximately 37,000 runners competing in both the 10km and 42km races. The 42km race commenced at 6:30 am from the National Stadium in Surulere, while the 10km race began at 9:30 am from the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.
To accommodate the event, the Lagos State Government announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along key routes from 5 am to 1 pm.
