Armed security personnel on Monday sealed off the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Legacy House in Abuja following escalating internal tensions within the opposition party.
The action reportedly came after intelligence reports suggested that rival factions within the party were planning simultaneous meetings that could lead to clashes among supporters. Witnesses said heavily armed police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrived early in the morning, barricading entrances and restricting access to both facilities.
Party staff and visitors were turned back, while patrol vehicles were stationed around the area to prevent any form of disturbance. The move, according to sources, was aimed at maintaining law and order as the party grapples with deepening leadership disputes and competing claims to control key structures.
A senior police officer confirmed that the deployment was “a preventive measure to avert a breakdown of peace”, noting that security agencies had been monitoring rising tension among party loyalists.
Meanwhile, top PDP officials have expressed concern over the closure, describing it as embarrassing and unnecessary, while others appealed for calm and unity.
The latest development underscores the growing crisis within the PDP, as efforts to reconcile warring factions and restore stability continue to face major setbacks.
