Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of misrepresenting the Senate on the global stage.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, recently suspended for six months for violating Senate rules, took her grievances to the United Nations Inter-parliamentary conference in New York. There, she accused Akpabio of victimisation, sexual harassment, and abuse of office.
During Thursday’s plenary, Akpabio condemned her actions, stating that she attempted to mislead the international community and tarnish the Senate’s reputation.
“I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalised the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative. I appreciate Hon Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that what was presented was completely different from the reality,” Akpabio said.
He further criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan for bypassing Senate procedures, taking the matter to court, and then to an international audience.
“She brought the matter before the Senate through a petition but did not allow us to examine it. Instead, she took it to court and later to the international community. Actions like these could discourage politicians from appointing women into key positions,” he added.
After receiving a vote of confidence from fellow senators, Akpabio urged lawmakers to remain committed to their legislative duties.
“I thank you for this vote of confidence. Let us stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions,” he said.
