A notorious bandit leader, Gwaska Dankarami, and approximately 100 of his followers have reportedly been killed in a joint military operation in north-west Nigeria. Dankarami, a high-value target and alleged second-in-command to an Islamic State-linked leader, was said to be hiding in the Munumu Forest. Authorities reported that several other criminal hideouts were destroyed across the state during the operation.
However, this is not the first time Dankarami’s death has been reported. In 2022, the Nigerian Air Force claimed to have killed him in a similar operation. Subsequent reports indicated that he survived with serious injuries after an air raid in Zamfara in January 2023. In April 2024, he was reportedly involved in violent clashes with rival bandit factions, leading to the deaths of other notorious leaders.
The Katsina State commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Nasir Mua’zu, described the killing as a significant milestone in the fight against banditry in the state. Security forces also recovered and destroyed weapons during the operation. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to restore stability in the north-west region of Nigeria, which has been plagued by repeated banditry attacks.
While the recent reports suggest a decisive blow against Dankarami’s network, the history of premature death claims warrants cautious optimism. Confirmation from independent sources and continued vigilance are essential to ensure the lasting impact of this operation.
