Following the devastating petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday, 86 people has been confirmed dead according to the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah.
Speaking on the development from the incident on Sunday, Arah said that 80 victims were buried in a mass grave at the premises of the Dikko Primary Health Care, while five bodies were claimed by relatives for private burial of their own.
The mass burial, organized by NSEMA in collaboration with Gurara local government officials and community volunteers, commenced at 5 p.m. and lasted until midnight.
According to him, one victim died from injuries, at the healthcare center.
The explosion had occurred when a fuel tanker traveling fully loaded with fuel overturned at the junction,
many residents gathered to scoop fuel from the spilled product. despite warnings to keep a safe distance.
Arah also confirmed that 55 people are currently receiving medical care.as a result of injuries sustained during the explosion and
