Authorities in Kenya have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a school that resulted in the deaths of 16 school girls, in a tragedy that has sparked national mourning and renewed concerns over school safety.

Security officials confirmed that emergency responders were deployed after a fire broke out at the school dormitory during the night. Despite efforts to contain the blaze and rescue students, 16 girls were reportedly confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have been deliberately set, prompting authorities to treat the incident as a criminal case. Investigators are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire, including possible suspects, motives, and any security lapses that may have contributed to the scale of the tragedy.

The Kenya Police Service has deployed forensic teams to the scene to gather evidence, while statements have been taken from school staff, students, and local residents. Officials say multiple lines of inquiry are being pursued as part of efforts to determine whether the fire was accidental or a planned attack.

Government representatives have expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a devastating loss. Authorities have also assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that those responsible will be held accountable once identified.

The incident has reignited debate over the safety of boarding schools in the country, with education stakeholders calling for improved fire safety standards, better emergency preparedness, and stricter enforcement of regulations governing school facilities.

Community members in the affected area have been left in shock, with many gathering to support grieving families and assist survivors. Religious and civic leaders have also urged calm as investigations continue.

As the probe progresses, officials have pledged to release more details once verified information becomes available, while reinforcing efforts to prevent similar tragedies in educational institutions across the country.
