Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has explained the reasons behind the delayed commencement of the proposed Ukwa Seaport Project, citing financial prudence and unforeseen technical challenges. Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association in Ukwa East LGA, the governor reassured residents that the project is still a top priority for his administration.
According to Otti, while feasibility studies conducted by Chinese partners have been completed, the findings indicated a significant change from earlier estimates—most notably, the need to dredge approximately 19.5 kilometres to the high sea, a task requiring massive capital outlay.
“This is not consistent with the initial preliminary report. Before we kick off any project, we must confirm it is viable and ensure funds are available to complete it. We won’t start only to abandon it midway,” Otti stated.
He stressed that all required licences and approvals have been secured, but the government is going back to the drawing board to ensure project sustainability.
Governor Otti also addressed road infrastructure in Ukwa East, firmly stating that no road project initiated by his administration will be abandoned. He cited progress on the Akirika-Obu Road, where he collaborated with Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno to resolve border issues, as well as ongoing construction on Obohia Road despite drainage challenges inherited from the previous administration.
“Obohia Road’s original tunnel was blocked, and restoring it would have cost more than building a new one. So we opted for a deeper, more efficient system to drain water into the Aba River,” he added.
The Mayor of Ukwa East, Mr. Chibunna Akara, praised Governor Otti for his developmental strides and affirmed the community’s support. Otti thanked the people for their encouragement and reiterated his commitment to delivering on their expectations.
