The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team. The announcement was made on January 7, 2025, following the endorsement of the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee’s recommendation by the NFF Executive Committee.
Chelle, previously the head coach of Mali’s national team, takes over from interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles during the initial stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His appointment fills the vacancy left after Jose Peseiro’s departure following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelle’s primary challenge will be to guide Nigeria through the remainder of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Currently, the Super Eagles are fifth in Group C and face the daunting task of winning all their remaining matches to keep their qualification hopes alive.
This appointment marks a pivotal moment for the team, with high expectations placed on Chelle to revitalize the squad and achieve success on the international stage.
