Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year contract, with the former Real Madrid coach set to take charge at Stamford Bridge from July 1.
The Premier League club confirmed the Spaniard’s appointment on Sunday, describing him as an outstanding coach and proven leader. Alonso replaces Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed after a disappointing, trophyless season that ended with defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Alonso said he was proud to join Chelsea, calling the club “one of the biggest” in world football. His contract runs until 2030, giving him a long-term mandate to rebuild a team that has struggled for consistency despite heavy investment in recent years.
The appointment marks Alonso’s first managerial role in the Premier League, where he previously starred as a midfielder for Liverpool. He arrives with a growing reputation after successful spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid, though his time in Spain reportedly ended amid internal tensions with senior players.
Chelsea’s hierarchy is said to view Alonso as a manager capable of bringing tactical clarity, authority and stability after several turbulent seasons. His immediate tasks will include assessing the squad, shaping summer transfer plans and preparing the team for the 2026-27 campaign.
The decision to give Alonso the title of manager, rather than head coach, is being interpreted as a sign that he may have broader influence over football operations than some of his recent predecessors.
For Chelsea, the move represents another major attempt to reset the club’s direction. For Alonso, it is a high-profile return to English football, this time from the dugout, with expectations already high at Stamford Bridge.
