Neymar has reached an agreement to extend his contract with Santos FC until the end of 2026, a source close to the talks has confirmed.
The deal, which comes after weeks of speculation about his future, means the 33-year-old will remain at the Brazilian club where he first rose to global stardom, at least through December 31, 2026.
Santos had teased the announcement on Wednesday with a cryptic video posted on social media, showing an aerial view of the Vila Belmiro stadium and the date “31/12/2026” alongside the message: “The time is coming.” The club did not mention Neymar by name, but the clip immediately fuelled rumours that a renewal was imminent.
Neymar’s initial contract, signed when he made his emotional return to Santos after spells at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, expired at midnight on December 31. His first season back was heavily disrupted by injuries, but he still managed to make a decisive impact in the run-in, scoring four goals as Santos won their final three matches to dramatically climb out of the relegation zone on the last day of the league campaign in December.
Following the season, Neymar underwent surgery to repair a damaged meniscus in his left knee, an operation carried out by the Brazil national team doctor and described by Santos as successful. The forward has not played for the Seleção since October 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
Despite his fitness struggles in recent years, Neymar remains one of Brazil’s most iconic active players. He is the country’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer with 79 goals, surpassing Pelé’s official tally, and his return to Santos has been seen by many fans as a full-circle moment for a player who left the club as a prodigy in 2013 to join Barcelona.
The new deal gives Santos stability as they look to rebuild around a young squad while keeping a global star as the face of the project. For Neymar, it offers continuity, time to fully recover from his latest knee operation, and the opportunity to lead his boyhood club through at least two more full seasons.
Details of salary and bonuses have not been made public, but the agreement effectively ends immediate speculation over another move abroad and confirms that, for now, Neymar’s future remains in Vila Belmiro.
