The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has formally requested that football’s global governing body, FIFA, refund tickets purchased by its citizens for upcoming World Cup-related events, following new travel restrictions imposed by the United States linked to Ebola concerns.
Authorities in Kinshasa say the restrictions have made it difficult—or in some cases impossible—for Congolese fans to travel to the US, where some fixtures and official tournament activities are expected to take place. As a result, many supporters who had already bought tickets are now unable to attend, prompting calls for financial compensation.
Officials argue that the situation is beyond the control of ticket holders, describing the travel limitations as an external policy decision that has directly disrupted plans made in good faith. They maintain that fans should not bear the financial burden for circumstances arising from international public health measures.
The request specifically urges FIFA to consider either full refunds or alternative arrangements for affected ticket holders. According to government sources, the appeal also highlights concerns about fairness, especially given that many purchases were made well in advance of the restrictions being announced.
The development comes amid broader discussions about how global sporting bodies should respond when geopolitical or health-related policies interfere with international attendance at major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup.
FIFA has not yet issued a detailed public response to the DRC’s request, but the matter is expected to be reviewed in line with its established ticketing and refund policies. The organization typically assesses exceptional circumstances on a case-by-case basis, particularly when external factors significantly impact travel or participation.
Meanwhile, affected fans in the DRC have expressed frustration over the uncertainty, with many calling for swift action to resolve the issue and provide clarity ahead of the tournament. The situation continues to draw attention as stakeholders await a formal decision from FIFA regarding possible refunds or compensation measures.
