Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca as the successor to long-serving manager Pep Guardiola, marking the beginning of a new era at the Premier League club.
The club confirmed Maresca’s appointment following Guardiola’s decision to step down after years of unprecedented success at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca, who previously served as part of Guardiola’s coaching staff before moving into management, is understood to have signed a long-term contract with the English champions.
In a statement, Manchester City described the Italian as a coach who fully understands the club’s football philosophy and development structure.
Club officials said Maresca’s tactical approach, leadership qualities and familiarity with the squad made him the preferred candidate to continue the team’s style and ambitions.
The 46-year-old gained recognition after impressive managerial performances in recent seasons, earning praise for his possession-based system and attacking football approach.
Speaking after his appointment, Maresca said he was honoured to take charge of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
“It is a privilege to continue the work that has been built here over the years,” he said, while thanking Guardiola and the club hierarchy for their confidence in him.
Guardiola, who transformed City into one of the most dominant teams in world football, reportedly backed Maresca’s appointment before his departure.
During Guardiola’s tenure, Manchester City won multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and the UEFA Champions League, establishing a period of sustained success rarely seen in English football.
Supporters and football analysts have already begun debating whether Maresca can maintain the high standards set by his predecessor.
Former players and pundits, however, noted that his previous experience within the club could ease the transition process.
Manchester City are expected to begin preparations for the new season under Maresca in the coming weeks as the club aims to remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.
