The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo at the age of 40.

Reports of Ekubo’s death emerged on Tuesday, May 12, with several Nigerian media outlets saying the actor died after a prolonged battle with cancer. The news triggered an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans and entertainment figures, although his family had not publicly released burial details at the time of reporting.

Actress Funke Akindele was among the Nollywood stars who reacted emotionally to the news, sharing a tribute on Instagram. Other colleagues also posted messages mourning the actor and recalling his warmth, charisma and contribution to the Nigerian film industry.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor became one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces through his roles in romantic dramas, comedies and mainstream cinema productions. He first gained wider public attention as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest before building a successful acting career.

Ekubo’s screen credits include Weekend Getaway, The First Lady, A Man for the Weekend, Zero Hour, Power of 1, Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Afamefuna. Known for his charm and versatility, he became a favourite among fans for roles that blended humour, style and emotional depth.

His reported death has shocked many Nigerians, particularly because he had kept a relatively low public profile in recent months. Some reports said he had been battling illness privately before the news became public.

Ekubo was widely regarded not only as an actor but also as a public personality who helped shape the image of modern Nollywood. He represented a generation of entertainers who expanded their influence beyond film into fashion, philanthropy, social media and youth culture.

Tributes have described him as talented, kind and deeply committed to his craft. Fans across social media have shared clips from his films, photographs and personal memories, reflecting the affection he commanded across Nigeria and the wider African entertainment community.

His passing, if formally confirmed by family representatives, would mark a major loss for Nollywood and for an industry in which he remained one of the most admired stars of his generation.
