Filmmaker and human development expert Toyosi Akerele-Oguniji has unveiled Makemation, Africa’s first AI-driven feature film, after three years of research, production, and editing.
“The future is here, and you can see how technology is radically transforming the world,” she said at the Lagos House premiere.
“AI is a career path I chose while pursuing my PhD. My thesis was on ‘The Role of AI: National and Economic Security.’ I am very passionate about the way AI is revolutionizing everything.”
Describing Makemation as a blend of generative AI and live-action, Toyosi emphasized its purpose: “AI should elevate humanity, not eliminate creativity and traditional filmmaking. This is just the beginning. We are going to shoot six episodes. My dream is for this film to inspire young Nigerians and Africans to explore technology’s possibilities.”
Starring Nollywood icons Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, and Shaffy Bello, the film highlights AI’s impact on society, covering STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, and gender equality.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended the production, vowing to support creative projects that advance the state’s entertainment industry.
Already gaining global recognition, Makemation was previewed at the 2024 Global AI Summit in Riyadh and a private screening in Kenya. It is set for nationwide release on April 18, 2025, followed by a school tour across Nigeria.
