The Anambra State government has terminated the appointment of eight members of the Agunechemba Security outfit after they were caught on video brutalizing a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor.
The incident, which took place earlier in the week, sparked outrage after a viral video showed armed vigilante operatives—operating under the group “Operation Udo Ga-Achi”—assaulting the corps member.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “inhumane” and calling for those responsible to be prosecuted.
Jennifer’s lawyer, Cyrus Onu, revealed that during the ordeal, the operatives threatened to rape and kill her for daring to speak up against their actions.
Speaking to journalists in Awka on Thursday, Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, said the government had taken responsibility for the incident. According to him, medical expenses for Elobor have been settled, her damaged belongings replaced, and an official apology issued to her family and the NYSC.
Emeakayi further disclosed that the dismissed operatives, who had claimed they were chasing suspected cultists, had overstepped their authority. He added that they would be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
“The Soludo administration will not tolerate any form of unprofessionalism, brutality or abuse of office by security operatives. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face immediate dismissal and prosecution,” he said, noting that the case would serve as a landmark in sanitizing local security operations.
When asked if the suspects had already been transferred into police custody, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond to calls or text messages.
