The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS has defended Nigeria against claims by Niger that it was plotting to destabilise its neighbours.
In a statement released on December 26, ECOWAS expressed deep concern over what it termed as allegations leveled against Nigeria and other member states.
ECOWAS said it stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS States against the allegation that they are sponsoring terrorism.
“For years, Nigeria has supported peace and security of several countries not only in the West African sub-region but on the African continent. The recent success recorded by the Multinational Joint Task Forces (MJTF), which Nigeria leads demonstrates the country’s commitment to peace and security across the region.”
“ECOWAS therefore refutes any allegation that such a generous and magnanimous country would become a state-sponsor of terrorism.”
“ECOWAS call on states in the region to promote dialogue and stability and refrain from making accusations that are not supported by any evidence,” the statement added.
Abdourahamane Tchiani, Niger’s military leader had accused Nigeria of harboring two French nationals that were sent out of Niger for alleged anti-government activities,, during a broadcast on Christmas day..
The military General also claimed that France had established a base in Nigeria where it was arming terror groups in the Lake Chad region to foment unrest in his country.
Niger had in January announced its decision to withdraw from ECOWAS
