U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly warned that Washington could halt weapons supplies to Ukraine in a bid to pressure European allies into supporting efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to media reports citing officials familiar with the discussions.
The move is said to be aimed at forcing NATO partners to join a proposed “coalition of the willing” to secure the vital shipping route, which has been disrupted amid escalating tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
European capitals had earlier resisted calls to deploy naval forces, with some arguing the crisis was “not our war,” prompting frustration from Washington.
Trump’s reported threat to cut support through NATO-backed Ukraine weapons programmes marks a significant escalation in efforts to compel allied participation, raising concerns about potential strains on transatlantic unity and continued military assistance to Kyiv.
