As of April 12, 2025, Israel has significantly expanded its military operations across the Gaza Strip. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have completed the takeover of the “Morag axis,” effectively cutting off the southern city of Rafah from Khan Younis. This move is part of a broader strategy to establish a “security zone” encompassing substantial portions of Gaza
The IDF has issued evacuation orders for residents in Khan Younis and surrounding areas, citing preparations for strikes in response to projectile launches from Gaza, for which Hamas has claimed responsibility. Similar evacuation directives have been extended to northern Gaza regions, including Beit Hanoun and the Netzarim Corridor, as Israel aims to expand its buffer zones.
Since the resumption of hostilities on March 18, following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, over 1,500 Palestinians have been reported killed, with many casualties among women and children, according to Gaza’s health authorities. The cumulative death toll in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has surpassed 50,000.
The humanitarian situation remains dire, with widespread displacement and critical shortages of essential supplies. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have expressed concern over the evacuation orders and the lack of adequate provisions for those affected.
Israel’s government maintains that these operations are necessary to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining hostages and to prevent further attacks. However, the escalating conflict continues to draw international scrutiny and calls for renewed efforts toward a ceasefire and humanitarian relief.
