A deadly missile attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy has left numerous civilians dead, according to local authorities, as Russian forces continue their aggressive push near the border region.
Sumy, located just 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) from Russia, has faced escalating bombardment in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials say the latest strike is another grim reminder of the growing threat from Moscow’s military.
“Many dead today as a result of a missile strike,” said Artem Kobzar, the acting mayor of Sumy, in a statement shared on social media. “The enemy has struck civilians again.”
The aftermath of the attack appeared in unverified posts online, with visuals depicting charred vehicles and thick smoke billowing from the city.
Sumy’s proximity to Russia’s Kursk region—where Ukrainian forces were recently pushed back—has made it a key target in Moscow’s ongoing operations. Ukrainian defense officials have previously expressed concern that the area could soon become the focus of a broader ground offensive.
Last month, Russia announced it had seized control of a village in the Sumy region—its first reported territorial gain in the area since the initial stages of the 2022 invasion.
Tensions in and around Sumy continue to rise as Ukrainian leaders urge international allies to remain vigilant and provide further support to repel future incursions.
