Carlos Alcaraz added another milestone to his already impressive career on Sunday, securing his first Monte Carlo Masters title with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.
The triumph gives the 21-year-old Spaniard his sixth Masters 1000 trophy and his most significant tournament win since lifting the Wimbledon title last year.
“I’m just really happy to have won Monte Carlo for the first time,” said Alcaraz, reflecting on his journey since a first-round exit during his tournament debut in 2022. “It’s been a really difficult week with a lot of difficult situations. I’m really proud of myself how I’ve dealt with everything. It’s been a really difficult month for me on the court and outside. Coming here and seeing how the whole hard work has paid off, I’m really happy.”
Alcaraz is set to climb to No. 2 in the ATP rankings, overtaking Alexander Zverev, after overcoming an inspired Musetti, who had previously knocked out Top 10 opponents Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur to reach his first Masters 1000 final.
Despite a strong start from Musetti, who recovered from an early break to take the opening set, Alcaraz soon found his rhythm. The Spaniard dominated the second set, dropping just one game, and carried that momentum into the decider.
Musetti struggled physically as the match wore on, receiving treatment for a leg issue when trailing 0-3 in the final set. Although he continued playing, the 22-year-old couldn’t keep pace with Alcaraz’s relentless intensity.
“Lorenzo’s been through a really tough week, long and intense matches,” Alcaraz acknowledged. “I feel sorry for him, one of the best results he has done, to end like this is not easy. Hopefully it’s not serious and he’s 100 percent soon.”
Despite the loss, Musetti will see his ranking rise to No. 11—his best to date. With the clay season in full swing, the Italian is aiming to carry this momentum into the upcoming French Open.
“It was probably one of my best tournaments so far,” Musetti said. “I’m disappointed I couldn’t finish the match in the best way, for the crowd. You deserve it so I will keep going and try and come back for revenge.”
