China has voiced strong support for Nigeria following threats by former US President Donald Trump over a possible military intervention in the country.
In a statement released on Monday by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing warned against any form of aggression targeting Nigeria, stressing that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected under international law.
“China stands firmly with Nigeria in defending its independence and sovereignty. No nation has the right to interfere in another country’s internal affairs under any pretext,” the statement read.
The Chinese government described Trump’s remarks as “reckless and destabilizing,” emphasizing that military coercion would only worsen regional insecurity in Africa. It further called on Washington to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue rather than confrontation.
Beijing also reaffirmed its commitment to deepen strategic cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in areas of defense, infrastructure, and trade. According to officials, Nigeria remains one of China’s “most valued partners” in Africa, and peace in the region is crucial for global stability.
Political analysts say China’s response signals a growing geopolitical divide over Africa’s future, as global powers jostle for influence on the continent. The statement also underscores Beijing’s willingness to challenge US dominance, especially in regions where its interests align with local governments.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the gesture, describing China’s position as “a timely show of solidarity.” The ministry reiterated that Nigeria would continue to pursue peaceful diplomacy while safeguarding its sovereignty against external threats.
