A prison in western Libya was breached after heavy fighting erupted between rival armed groups in Surman and nearby Zawiya, forcing authorities to launch a search for escaped inmates.
The violence, which spread across several communities west of Tripoli, also left civilians dead and injured.
The Judicial Police Authority said the jailbreak occurred as clashes intensified around the correctional facility. Officials did not disclose how many prisoners escaped but confirmed that security agencies had begun efforts to identify and recapture those who fled.
“A committee has been formed to identify the fugitives and take the necessary legal measures.”
The armed confrontation also took a toll on residents. Local officials reported multiple casualties, while several others were injured as gunfire and explosions engulfed parts of the two towns. Community representatives appealed for an immediate end to the fighting to prevent additional loss of life.
“Everyone who wins in this situation loses.”
The unrest extended to Zawiya, a key energy hub that hosts Libya’s largest functioning oil refinery. As the security situation worsened, the refinery’s operator advised employees to avoid dangerous areas and comply with emergency safety measures.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as smoke rose above residential neighbourhoods and gunfire echoed through the streets. Local authorities said homes and other property were damaged before security forces gradually restored a measure of calm.
Officials have not identified the armed groups involved or announced what sparked the latest violence. The incident nevertheless highlights Libya’s continuing instability, where rival factions continue to clash despite repeated efforts to restore lasting peace.
Security agencies are continuing investigations into both the prison escape and the fighting. Authorities say operations are underway to locate the escaped inmates while reinforcing security across the affected communities to prevent further unrest.
