The Taliban on Saturday released Peter and Barbara Reynolds, British aid workers aged 80 and 75, who had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades running an education and training organization in Bamiyan province. The couple had chosen to remain in the country after the Taliban’s 2021 takeover.

Announcing the move, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi said: “Two British citizens, Peter and Barbara Reynolds, who violated Afghan law, were released from prison today after a court hearing. The Islamic Emirate does not look at the issues of citizens from a political or business perspective… We also thank the sincere efforts and facilitation of the mediation of the brotherly country of Qatar in this regard, which came with the British Special Representative Richard Lindsay, and to whom the British citizens were handed over.”

Qatar, which has frequently mediated between the Taliban and Western governments, brokered the arrangement. Diplomats familiar with the talks said the couple was handed to a British envoy and departed Afghanistan the same day.

The case drew international attention and renewed concerns about Taliban governance and due-process standards. The Reynolds’ family in the U.K. had repeatedly appealed for their release, alleging mistreatment during detention.

The release comes as the Taliban seeks to burnish its international standing nearly four years after reclaiming control of Afghanistan, pressing for recognition and relief from isolation and sanctions. For Western governments, such cases remain a test of limited engagement with de facto authorities, balancing humanitarian access and consular protection against ongoing concerns over human rights, women’s education and work, and counterterrorism commitments.
