Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has poured cold water on the idea of a grand opposition alliance aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 elections, calling the plan futile from the start.
Appearing on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Friday, the outspoken PDP chieftain dismissed the proposed coalition being floated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
“Their coalition is a dead horse ab initio,” Fayose said. “Tell me one positive person, well-respected Nigerian that has given his voice in support of this coalition.”
He argued that PDP governors have distanced themselves from Atiku’s efforts, prioritizing their own political survival over any united front.
“The governors’ actions and statement in Ibadan is to tell Atiku that we are not with you, we are going nowhere, we have our own identity,” he added.
Fayose believes the opposition is fragmented, and even some PDP leaders prefer Tinubu to Atiku. He emphasized that internal problems within the PDP must be resolved before the party can challenge the ruling APC effectively.
He also reaffirmed his personal stance against Atiku’s presidential ambitions.
“I publicly worked against Atiku, and I am saying for the second time, if Atiku comes again, I will work against him. It is time to learn our lesson,” Fayose declared.
He blamed the party’s internal crisis on the abandonment of its zoning arrangement, arguing power should have shifted to the South after Buhari’s eight-year rule.
“You don’t have to like a Nyesom Wike or a Peter Obi, but there should be an unwritten, respected gentleman’s understanding of power shift,” Fayose said.
