The Labour Party has said it does not currently operate any active social media account for public communication, warning Nigerians to ignore posts from accounts claiming to speak on its behalf. The clarification, issued in Abuja on Sunday by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman, comes amid the party’s continuing internal leadership crisis and renewed confusion over who controls its digital platforms.
According to Asogwa, the party’s attention was drawn to an X account operating under the name “LABOUR PARTY (LP) NIG” with the handle @LabourpartyNGR_, which he described as fraudulent. He said the account falsely presents itself as an official communication channel for the party and is the same one previously disowned in a February statement, but later rebranded in an apparent bid to continue misleading the public.
For clarity, Asogwa said the party’s only previously known social media handles were Facebook: Labour Party-Nig, with about 12,000 followers, and X: LabourPartyNG, with about 837,000 followers, but stressed that both are currently inactive from the standpoint of the interim leadership. He said the party is therefore not using any social media platform at the moment to issue official statements.
Instead, he said, all authentic communication from the Labour Party is being released strictly through authorised press statements from the Office of the Interim National Chairman. He added that any future change to that arrangement would be formally announced to the public.
Asogwa also disclosed that the party has petitioned the Nigeria Police to help recover its official X account, LabourPartyNG, which he said remains under the control of the former party leadership. According to him, the matter is being handled by the Force Intelligence Department, and individuals including Julius Abure and Umar Farouk are cooperating with investigators by providing information relating to the unauthorised use of the party’s social media platforms.
The statement specifically urged the public to disregard any information originating from @LabourpartyNGR_ as well as content currently being circulated through LabourPartyNG. Asogwa cited as an example a recent post claiming that the party was expecting the return of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, saying such a message was entirely unauthorised and did not reflect the Labour Party’s position.
