There was chaos at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday after a group of aggrieved members stormed the secretariat, demanding a change in the party’s leadership.
Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters, believed to be loyal to a rival faction within the party, arrived in large numbers, chanting solidarity songs and calling for the resignation of key national officers. Security operatives quickly moved in to prevent the situation from escalating, as tensions ran high outside the building.
The group accused the current leadership of poor performance and internal manipulation, claiming that the party had lost direction ahead of the next general elections. They insisted that an immediate restructuring was necessary to restore confidence among party members and supporters across the country.
In response, a spokesperson for the PDP described the protest as “unauthorized and politically motivated”, alleging that it was orchestrated by external forces seeking to destabilize the opposition party. The spokesperson also assured members that the party’s leadership remains intact and is focused on uniting its ranks.
Despite the assurances, the confrontation has deepened the cracks within the PDP, which has struggled in recent months with factional disputes and leadership wrangling. Party elders are reportedly making efforts to mediate between the warring sides to prevent a full-blown crisis.
As of press time, normalcy had been restored at the secretariat, though security presence remained heavy amid fears of renewed protests in the coming days.
