The former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognizing the Mark-led executive committee of the party, describing the move as “irresponsible and unacceptable.”
Speaking during n Channels Television programme, Kachikwu argued that INEC’s action undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent for political parties in Nigeria.
“INEC’s recognition of the Mark-led ADC is irresponsible. It disregards due process and promotes illegality within political parties,” Kachikwu declared.
He further stressed that the Commission’s decision could worsen leadership crises in other political parties, since it signals that internal disputes might be resolved through external influence rather than democratic processes.
Transitioning from his concerns, Kachikwu also pointed out that the recognition had created fresh tension among ADC members, instead of fostering unity and stability.
In addition, the ADC chieftain urged INEC to reverse its decision and allow the courts to settle the leadership tussle.
“The courts remain the final arbiter in political disputes. Any attempt to bypass the judiciary only weakens our democracy,” he added.
According to him, if INEC continues to interfere in party leadership matters without following due process, Nigeria’s democratic institutions will face further erosion of trust.
Kachikwu concluded by calling on party members to remain calm while he pursues legal steps to challenge the Commission’s decision.
