“NFF Board Should Be Dissolved If Nigeria Miss 2026 World Cup” — Mikel Obi
Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has called for the dissolution of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board if the country fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during a sports forum in Lagos, Mikel expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s recent performances in the World Cup qualifiers. He noted that the Super Eagles’ inconsistency has left millions of fans anxious about the nation’s chances.
“The NFF board should be dissolved if Nigeria miss the 2026 World Cup. There must be accountability when football administrators fail to deliver on the biggest stage,” Mikel insisted.
Furthermore, the former Chelsea midfielder stressed that Nigerian football has suffered from poor leadership and lack of planning. According to him, if drastic measures are not taken, the country risks falling further behind in global football.
Transitioning from his criticism, Mikel highlighted the need for competent administrators who would prioritize the welfare of players and invest in grassroots development.
In addition, Mikel explained that qualifying for the World Cup is more than just a sporting achievement. He argued that it boosts national pride, strengthens unity, and creates global opportunities for Nigerian players.
“The World Cup is not just a tournament; it’s where nations showcase their best talents. Missing it again would be a huge setback for Nigerian football,” he added.
As Nigeria prepares for crucial qualifying fixtures, Mikel urged the NFF to put politics aside and focus on results. He maintained that only through proper planning and accountability can the Super Eagles secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.
