Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of Rivers that the ongoing political turmoil will ultimately strengthen them rather than break their spirit.
Fubara gave this reassurance when he hosted a delegation of Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic-based organizations, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, at his private residence in Port Harcourt. The visit was part of the Eid-El-Fitr celebrations.
Speaking to his guests, the governor urged them to remain hopeful and trust in divine intervention, despite the challenges the state is currently facing.
“This season is one of love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made a great sacrifice through your prayers. As Christians, we believe that everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe that this situation is leading us toward a greater purpose.”
Fubara acknowledged that the ongoing political crisis could be disheartening for many, but he stressed that unseen forces might be guiding events toward a greater good.
“No matter what we see, we must remain steadfast. In all things, we give glory to Almighty God. I believe that in the end, we will emerge stronger.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to justice and equality, the governor emphasized that his government stands for fairness and would continue to uphold the rights of all citizens.
“We believe in egalitarianism, and if our beliefs bring us some pain, so be it. The most important thing is that we stand on the side of truth and righteousness.”
While expressing regret for not formally reaching out to the Muslim community during their celebrations, Fubara assured them that government-religious relations would be strengthened once the political instability subsides.
Encouraging patience, Fubara referenced a religious parable, urging his supporters to stay resolute in the face of trials.
“If God could be patient with Noah to allow even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains an essential virtue in our struggle.”
He also warned against individuals trying to provoke violence, urging Rivers residents not to fall for manipulations that could destabilize the state.
“Their goal is to create problems and deny people their means of livelihood. We will not allow that. We will continue to operate peacefully and respect constitutional authority to ensure that our state remains a model for others in Nigeria.”
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim community, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor expressed their unwavering support for Fubara, assuring him of their continued prayers.
He commended the governor for his inclusive approach to governance, pointing out that unlike the previous administration, which declared Rivers a Christian-only state, Fubara had recognized religious diversity in the region.
Encouraging the governor to stay strong, Uhor reminded him of the Islamic principle that Allah rewards patience and perseverance.
He also urged President Bola Tinubu to review the emergency rule in Rivers State and restore Fubara’s full authority, arguing that despite the political turbulence, the governor had remained focused and effective in leadership.
The gathering concluded with special prayers for Fubara, his family, Rivers State, and Nigeria as a whole.
