Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered an immediate suspension of all unauthorized vigilante groups operating within the state.
Additionally, he has suspended CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, following a tragic incident in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area that resulted in the killing of several travelers.
A statement signed by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the Edo State Government, clarified that the decision came after a preliminary review of the events that unfolded on March 27.
“It is to be reiterated that the local vigilante group involved in the gruesome killing of 27th March was operating illegally as it was never profiled or registered with Edo State Security Corps,” the statement read.
The government further stressed that the actions of the illegal vigilante group do not reflect the core values of the Okpebholo administration or the principles outlined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the killings, with fourteen individuals already arrested, while security forces are actively pursuing other suspects. A special team, set up by the Inspector General of Police, has been tasked with apprehending those responsible.
The Edo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely and conduct lawful business.
In the wake of the tragedy, the government has established communication with the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, as many of the deceased are believed to be from Kano.
“We urge all parties involved to remain calm as the State Government remains committed to ensuring that justice is done in a most efficient, transparent and proactive manner,” the statement concluded.
